PUGLIA and BASILICATA TOUR 

Program:

• Day 1: 
ARRIVAL IN BARI
Arrival at Bari’s Airport where you will be met by our team, your Puglia travel host. Transfer to your hotel in Bari, where you’ll find in your room a basket full of Apulian specialities. After settling in and relaxing for a few hours, you’ll enjoy a traditional Pugliese dinner. Overnight stay in Bari at the Palace Hotel.

• Day 2: 
BARI
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Palace Hotel at 9.30 for a fascinating bus tour followed by a walking tour through the ancient alleys, visiting the “Basilica of St. Nicholas“, one of the most remarkable examples of Romanesque architecture, the exterior of the ’’Norman- Swabian Castle’’ built in Norman times.
We’ll drive to the elegant town of Lecce, where the group will check in at ‘’ Hotel delle Palme’’ or ‘’Masseria Terra dei Padri’’ ( A masseria in the heart of Salento and nestled in olive groves). At dinnertime we’ll dine in a typical Apulian restaurant after a cooking show where the chef will demonstrate how to make ‘’orecchiette’’, ‘’meatballs’’ and ‘’pasticciotto’’ (Each guest will be gifted with a little recipe book afterwards).

• Day 3: 
LECCE
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30 for a guided tour in the heart of Lecce, known as “The Florence of the South” for its baroque style buildings.
Walking through the historical centre we’ll visit ‘’Palazzo Adorni’’ (where underneath flows the ‘’Idume River’’), St. Oronzo Square, the amphitheater and St. Chiara Cathedral. Lesiure time to explore and have lunch. We’ll meet again at the Hotel for dinner.

• DAY 4: 
GALATINA AND GALLIPOLI
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30 for a guided tour of Galatina, an important Greek colony, where we’ll visit the ‘’Museum of Tarantism’’, ‘’S. Pietro e S. Paolo’s Church’’, ‘’S. Paolo Well’’ and ‘’S. Caterina D’Alessandria’s Cathedral’’ with its early 15th century frescoes and scenes from the old and New Testaments.
You can’t leave Galatina without trying the ‘’Pasticciotto Galatinese’’, the ‘’Africano’’ and the ‘’Mustaccioli’’. We’ll visit the town’s oil mill and we’ll take part in the oil making process.
Afterwards we’ll travel to Gallipoli and visit the historical centre and the famous fish market, where we’ll buy some freshly caught fish that will be cooked by our chef at the Hotel.

• DAY 5: 
OTRANTO
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30 for a guided tour of Otranto, also known as ‘’ Martyrs City’’, where we’ll visit the square with its ancient Castle, the cathedral and the shrine ‘’Martyrs of Otranto’’ dated back to the XII century.
We’ll then enjoy a lunch in a typical restaurant. We’ll explore the Bauxite Cave with its pond and its striking red dunes. From here, we’ll travel to ‘’Punta Palascia’’, where we’ll reach the Easternmost point of Italy.

• DAY 6:  
LECCE
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30.
‘’Catello Monaci’’ or ‘’Masseria Terra dei Padri’’ will take us through an unforgettable journey through their vineyards and olive groves. We’ll then visit the ‘’Wine Museum’’ and at the end of the tour there will also be a wine tasting where you will be able to buy a bottle of wine or oil.
After lunch, we’ll watch a show of a local artist that will paint for us to the rhythm of music in his villa.
*You can also go on a horse-riding tour of the grounds (40 euros for 2 hours, per person) or take part in a papier-papier-mache laboratory, where the guests can make (with the help of experts) some handmade articles related to the Apulian tradition (39 euros for 1h - per person).

• DAY 7: 
MATERA
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30, we’ll then leave for Matera and at our arrival we’ll check in at the ‘’Borgo Bianco Resort&Spa’’. We’ll then continue our tour to a local BAKERY for hands on making bread made in an old wood-burning oven. Rest of the day is at leisure in beautiful Matera.

• DAY 8: 
MATERA AND CEGLIE MESSAPICA
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30.
MATERA is a fabulous town of prehistoric grottoes, cave tabernacles, abandoned hovels and Renaissance houses, all excavated into the luminous limestone tufa. The rock-cut cave dwellings known as the SASSI, date back to Byzantine times. With the help of a locally-grown expert, we’ll learn the history and tales of old and new Matera. We’ll visit “Casa Cisterna” an ancient cave dwelling which tells a tale of poverty, hardship and struggle, whose history is best immortalized in the writer Carlo Levi’s superb book “Christ stopped at Eboli“, comparing the Sassi to Dante’s Inferno. After an included lunch with local products, you’ll visit a cave church-featuring medieval frescoes with their own legends that we will learn about. We’ll leave for Ceglie Messapica in the afternoon, where we’ll check into our Hotel and we’ll visit the historical centre and dine in a typical restaurant.

• DAY 9: 
ALBEROBELLO AND OSTUNI
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30.
We’ll continue our journey to the town of Alberobello, famous for its district of Trulli, spread over the hillside to the south of the town. These square structures have conical roofs covered with “Chiancarelle”, grey-limestone roof slabs and are crowned by differently shaped pinnacles, each with a magical significance. After lunch our local tour guide will show you an 18th century small Trullo House, and give you the feeling and sensation of Trullo life. You will see the sweet, rounded rooms that include a re-created bakery, bedroom and kitchen. In the late afternoon we’ll drive toward Ostuni, also known as the ‘’white town’’ and walk through the historical centre. We’ll then check in at the hotel and we’ll have dinner at the Hotel’s restaurant.

• DAY 10: 
POLIGNANO A MARE AND CASTEL DEL MONTE
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30.
We’ll start the day with a demonstration of the burrata cheese making. The journey will take you through the Murgia Valley with wide horizons, bold colors and strange harsh landscape. Here you can experience the imperial Puglia dominated by the presence of Fredrick II.
The group will visit to the picturesque fishing village of Polignano a Mare. The town is perched on limestone cliffs, stunning vistas and picturesque narrow streets. After an included lunch, we’ll travel to Castel del Monte, a UNESCO Heritage site which dominates the countryside of Andria from its 540 meters sea level. Afterwards, we’ll travel to Trani and check into our Hotel and we’ll have dinner at the Hotel ‘s restaurant.

• DAY 11: 
TRANI
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 9.30.
We’ll visit the picturesque town of Trani with its alleys and small craft shops, ‘’S. Nicola’s Pellegrino Cathedral’’, ‘’Castello Svevo’’ and the Jewish neighbourhood. We’ll start the day with a demonstration of the Burrata cheese making.
We’ll celebrate your Apulian adventure with a farewell dinner at one of the typical regional restaurants in Trani.

• DAY 12:
 ARRIVEDERCI PUGLIA!
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning transfers to Bari airport or train station.
